The record is down to 11 seconds.

At the time of the official opening of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics games, Google unsurprisingly updated its logo to celebrate the occasion. The thing that many didn`t know was how much work went into this Google Doodle. It wasn`t just a logo overhauland a full-blown RPGfeaturing anime-inspired cutscenes.

MARVEL Contest of Champions

The game continues to play on the Google homepage, and players taking control of Lucky the Cat. Lucky can communicate with other charactersand play mini-games. As with all games speedrunning is a major part of the game`s launch. The race begins for the fastest time in any of the minigames. It`s currently at 11 seconds.

Plants vs Zombies 2

The 11-second record was achieved by three runners: ExaminationMassive95, stratpat1964, and dishadow99. These times were shared with the r/speedrun community and included the climbing minigame within the RPG. The race is extremely close having previously held the record of 12 seconds.

Google Doodles have helped create a community of speedrunningthat goes beyond just to commemorate the 2020 Olympics. The 30th anniversary celebration of Pac-Man included an arcade game added to the Google homepageSome players are continuing to race to see who can rack up 10,000 points the fastest. It`s clearly a very optimized performance, as the distinction between records in the leaderboards lies in milliseconds. The record for the world being 46 seconds and 567 milliseconds.

However, the Tokyo Olympics Google Doodle was not able to be included in this year’s Summer Games Done Quick. The event hosted over 100 speedrunsacross a variety of gamesand, just like usual, raised funds to Doctors Without Borders. Even though it was moved to a virtual show instead of the traditional live showthe speedrunning community raised $2,897,000 for the charity- the third-highest number of participants in the history of the event.
